The gait of borrowed humans.
Notes from the second wave of humanoid robotics pilots. Spring 2026.
Figure, Apptronik, and Optimus units are now in active pilot deployments across a small set of sites: a BMW plant, a Mercedes line, several Amazon facilities, scattered European factory floors. Independent observations from the floors are starting to converge.

Workers report not noticing them. Within four to six weeks, the robot becomes part of the periphery, closer to a forklift than a colleague. The thing built to read as human succeeds by failing to read as anything at all.

The uncanny valley moved. It used to live in the face. It lives now in the hip. A humanoid does not walk like us. It walks like a thing that is trying to look like it is walking. You feel the simulation before you see it. Most people do not have a vocabulary for this, so they call it "weird" and look away.

The bodies are getting better fast. The thing that does not get better at the same rate is the small, internal flinch in the human who is alone in the room with one.
A humanoid is the most expensive object ever built whose purpose is to be unremarkable. It will be a long time before we have the right word for what it feels like when one almost is.
