Whose draft is this.
On agentic writing, and the small cost of starting without resistance. Spring 2026.
The blank page is gone. For most of my career, the hardest part of any deliverable was the empty document. That problem has been solved. An agent can produce a competent first draft of almost anything I work on in under a minute. The drafts are good. They are not the issue.

What I notice is harder to name. Editing text into your voice is not the same activity as discovering your voice by writing. Editing is selection. Writing is finding. I have a stronger output and a thinner sense of having said something.

A piece of work used to teach you what you thought while you made it. With an agent in the loop, you arrive at the page already knowing roughly what will appear there. The thinking has been pre-budgeted. The discovery has been moved upstream, to the prompt, which is usually shorter than the essay was going to be.

Authorship in 2026 is becoming a question of editorial taste rather than generative effort. This is not bad. It is, however, different. The field has not finished figuring out what to call the people who are good at it.
I do not want to go back. The agent has given me back hours I will spend on other work. The honest accounting is that something else has been spent, quietly, on the way through. The books for it have not yet been opened.
