Phrenology was wrong about everything except the wanting: the hope that character might be legible from the outside, that you could run your hands over a skull and know what it would do. We have built minds whose insides we cannot read, and so we are back to palpation · benchmarks, evals, pressing on the surface and recording what feels enlarged.
